"What do you know about Mapuche Indians?Most live in Chile, but a large population settled in the Andes in Argentina after the Spanish Conquest (1540). The chilean Mapuche resisted control during the Spanish colonial and early republican periods. They wer finally pacified and settled on more than 3,000 small reservations between 1884 and 1912. Today they are the largest indigenous society in South America, with a population of about 675,000. Many of the younger generation migrate to towns to become labourers. The reservation system has helped to perpuate traditional Mapuche Society and culture."
